How would I tell if some one else is on my computer?

Thank you in advance!

That is such a loaded question... There are many things that can be going on there...

    1) IF your computer is connected directly to the Internet, say via DSL/Cable without any type of router/firewall device between it and the Internet AND you do not have any type of firewall software running AND you are running on MS Windows. You are in the most vulnerable position you could be. YES, someone could literally directly access your computer and mess around with it behind the scenes without your knowledge. Chances are you have a very weak password protecting your computer IF you even have one.

    2) IF your computer is behind a firewall (Software or Hardware) then you are _less_ likely to get hacked, more likely IF you are being hacked then someone is doing it mid stream (intercepting your IP packets.) Keep in mind that you pretty much can latch on to any messenger conversation that is un-encrypted out there and just watch the entire conversation with a sniffer.

    3) See #2, just same for email. People can watch certain ports and when they see traffic on say port 109/110/143 (POP/IMAP) they will see you downloading your email. They could watch said stream for your password then mess with your email at that point.

With that said, it is a good idea to change your passwords often so they are not easily compromised. Also it is a good thing to use SSL for things like email so that your connection to the server is encrypted and your password is not in the open. (Not all ISP's offer SSL for email.)

Those are just a couple of basic things I can think of off the top of my head. There is of course many more answers to your question of which you have not provided enough information to determine what may be happening.

To add to Tonys, you should make sure you have an up to date virus scanning and malware detection software and scan your system.

Even behind a firewall, if you click on the wrong webpage link or open the wrong program you can infect your system with a virus or trojan that can call out and allow a hacker to connect to your machine.

    Thanks guys!

I did the port scan and it says ALL ports are secured..... I just find it odd that people trying to reach me get an "error" signal. And the other day using chat, my freind said he could not see the messages I was writing to him? I felt invaded.... not sure how to explain it. It is odd though because he could reply to me and I could see him messages, but he said he could not see mine. It feels like someone elses is on my computer. It becomes slow sometimes to access a page like as if some one elses is accessing it too.... maybe I am too uspiscious, but I can't help but feel that I am being hacked.

Is there some kind of scan I can do to see if anyone has broken in here?

    Thank you,
    Lana

..uh .not really....just don't worry about it too much if you can get to the stuƒƒ you need ok ? Most everyone in the known universe has port 21-22 open..

Can you explain what port 21-22 is? If it is open, why didn't the scan tell me this?

. .sure we can. .port 21-22 is a standard opening in your computer from within which your computer communicates with other computers on the net... .it is the default settign for 99% of personal computers. .for ..let's say. .sharing files . .via .FTP dot file transfer protocol..ok . .say Tribe dot net want to send you nfo from their site. .(= what we are using). .they must have an open port in order to get the information out to us.. .
Port Scanning host: 64.158.56.55.i. .... n reality they do not use port 21-22... because they are ahuge operation and it would clog...but that would be the default port for them or many other pee ceees...
One can restrict access to this port ..through the use of firewall software . .or depending on your system software..generally Mac® or Windows®. .one can go in and restrict access through this port to your machine's hard drive..
as a muscian..i happen to use a mac®. .i share files.. music..and have therefore restricted access to my laptop.. . file sharing via FTP file transfer protocol..to my music folder only..( picture posted =)..
even on a mac® there are many . .many options . .for sharing computers and information across the i-net..that.. parenthetically..i have not enabled because . . to be frank . .i am on dial-up and it just slows internet access down. .in this case. .my lack of DSL serves as a great firewall. .
open ports are where crackers get in to your machine. .other port numbers are open, also, and used for other purposes..but one doesn't have to get paranoid about this..crackers are in to cracking NYC wall st computers and big corporations..not your's or mine..we don't have any thing real interesting on our machines that they would want... .you're much more apt to stumble in to a site that takes your credit card number with out sending you product than anything. .as a garden variety type user..
Your scan didn't tell you your port was open because you didn't scan your own machine internet protocol address ( IP addy =) probably..
          Ω
          now, after three firefox® crashes ( Tribe® runs a rather buggy dynmic name server DNS =). .i would suggest running this absoultely free firewall test service to assail your fears;
          www.auditmypc.com/firewall-test.asp
          . .

          > "Can you explain what port 21-22 is? If it is open, why didn't the scan tell me this? "

          The short answer is:

Port 21 is for FTP (you connect to a service on port 21 then get a higher numbered port >1024 to transfer the file on)
Port 22 is for SSH (Secure Shell. It's a terminal connection to a server typically, better than Telnet. You may use it for many things like a terminal session or SFTP, etc.)
